How to Cut a Pineapple

To some people, cutting a pineapple may seem like second nature, but it took a long time for me to figure out what I think is the best way to cut a pineapple.  Pineapple is one of my favorite fruits, and it’s usually one everyone in the family likes.  I hope you find the steps easy to follow and the pictures helpful.  The only tools you need are a long, sharp serrated knife and a large cutting board.

  1.  Cut the top and bottom off the pineapple.  When you’re taking the top and bottom off, try to cut as close to the skin as possible so you don’t end up with wasted fruit.

  2. Stand the pineapple up.  Again, staying as close as possible to the skin, saw off the skin starting at the top and working your way down.

  3. Clean up the fruit by gently cutting away any extra bits of the outer layer that may still be on the fruit.  Look for any bruising and cut that off, too.

  4. Cut the pineapple in half lengthwise.  Cut it in half lengthwise again.  Now the pineapple is in 4 long, equal sections.

  5. Lay each piece down flat, and use your knife to cut out the core of the pineapple at a 45 degree angle.  Discard the core.  (Note:  If you are going to puree or blend the fruit, you can skip this step.)

  6. Cut each quarter of pineapple in half lengthwise one more time.

  7. Finally, slice each strip of pineapple horizontally until it’s all in equal bite-sized slices.  Store  in a single layer to prevent bruising.
