Strawberry Basil Gin Fizz

Let’s toast to my first cocktail recipe!  I just realized that I like gin last year.  After trying it once when I was 19 and deciding it tastes like Christmas trees, I had it again last summer while we were on vacation in Deep Creek, Maryland.  I had it in a cocktail (which I’m going to also try to replicate this summer for the blog) that had a really herbal + cucumber + floral flavor.  I’m not really a sweet drink-drinker, so once I realized gin could be used like that, I started liking it. 

This drink is pretty easy to make once you have the strawberry puree.  The strawberry puree is actually super easy, too; it just takes a while to defrost the frozen strawberries. 


Total Time:  10 Minutes (not including the Strawberry Puree)1

Serves:  2 drinks

Difficulty Level:  Easy



½ of a lime, cut into 6 chunks

4 basil leaves

2 teaspoons stevia


4 ounces gin

6 ounces strawberry lime puree (method follows)

Soda water



  1. Put half of the lime chunks into the bottom of each glass (a 16 ounce mason jar is ideal for this). Divide the basil and stevia evenly between the 2 glasses, and use a muddler to mash everything together.
  2. Divide the ice, gin, and strawberry lime puree evenly between the two glasses, and stir everything together.
  3. Fill the rest of the glass with chilled soda water, and serve immediately.



Method for Strawberry Puree

Total Time:  10 Minutes (not including defrosting time)

Yield:  2 cups of puree

Difficulty Level:  Easy



4 cups whole frozen strawberries (not the kind in syrup)

Juice of 2 limes



  1. Allow the strawberries to completely defrost, either overnight in the refrigerator or on the counter for a few hours.
  2. Add the strawberries and lime juice to a blender, and blend until smooth.
  3. Pour the puree through a sieve into a bowl to remove all the seeds.
  4. Use to make the Strawberry Basil Gin Fizz!
